History of North Myrtle Beach

Over the years the North Myrtle Beach area has played home to many different peoples including native americans, settlers, farmers and fishermen.

Since the early 20th century when connecting raildroads made the area accesible for many, the area has grown into one of the most popular beach resort towns in South Carolina and popular vacation destination for visitors from all over the world.

Popular amongst vacationers since the 1920, the Ocean Drive area of North Myrtle Beach steadily grew into an important part of the Grand Strand tourism industry, and was incorporated in 1968. At this time, four oceanfront areas — Windy Hill, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive and Cherry Grove Beach — came together to form the city proper.

These days the area is home to more than 12,000 year-round residents and it the population grows exponentially during the summer months as visitors pack the many North Myrtle Beach hotels, vacation rentals and beach houses to enjoy its sand shores.

Though Main Street North Myrtle Beach and the famed "horseshoe" area of Ocean Drive serve as the heart of the city — filled with quaint shops, restaurants and beachy, throwback shag dance clubs — the area is growing in all directions.

Some of the most popular areas of the town include Barefoot Landing, a huge shopping and entertainment complex that includes restaurants, theaters, gift shops and much more.

Among the most recent additions to the North Myrtle Beach area landscape is the North Myrtle Beach Sports & Recreation Complex, an enormous park that plays home to many special events and sporting competitions, and the Coastal North Town Centre, a shopping area with more than two dozen shops and restaurants.
