Terry’s Top 10: Places to Play Putt-Putt Golf
Looking for something fun to do with the whole family while vacationing in Myrtle Beach without going broke? Then I've got just two words for you - putt and putt.
Sure, Myrtle Beach is known as the real Golf Capital of the World, but it's also a mecca for mini-golf, as well, with more than 50 golf courses on the Grand Strand.
That's why this week's list is dedicated to miniature golfers (or rather regular-sized golfers on miniature courses) with my top 10 places to play putt-putt golf:
10. Mt. Atlanticus
First on the list is one of the area's oldest and best, Mt. Atlanticus, located in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. It may not be as fancy as some of the more modern courses in town, but the tiki huts and changing elevations make it one of the most popular. By the final hole you are four stories high, offering nice views of the neon Ocean Boulevard strip.
9. MayDay Miniature Golf
MayDay Miniature Golf in North Myrtle Beach takes golfers on a real island adventure, beginning with a mock airplane ride that ends in disaster that leaves players stranded on a tropical island. The Mayday Mountain course takes golfers to higher elevations under the wings of the big yellow plane that sits atop the course, while the Rescue Falls course winds through waterfalls and features a helicopter rescue.
8. Buccaneer Bay Miniature Golf
Buccaneer Bay Miniature Golf in Surfside Beach is another pirate-themed course, but it takes the golf to another level. Conveniently located near Lakewood Campground near the south end of Myrtle Beach, it's a hot spot for happy campers who play all day while taking breaks back at camp. An all-day pass can be had for $10, a bargain for those who plan to make a day of it.
7. Jungle Lagoon Miniature Golf
Jungle Lagoon Miniature Golf, also located in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach, is like a jungle paradise just two blocks from the beach. The two 18-hole courses feature waterfalls, tropical plants and statues of wild animals to complete the theme and give families a chance to get some good vacation photos. It's close enough to the beach that many folks buy an all-day pass and take breaks at the beach between rounds.
6. Treasure Island Golf
Treasure Island Golf in Myrtle Beach is as much an adventure as a round of putt-putt. Based on the novel by the same name, the course features hidden clues that lead them to the treasure while playing over rocks, waterfalls and other pirate-themed hazards. One of its best features is that by paying for one round golfers get access to the course all day.
5. Professor Hacker's Lost Treasure Golf
Professor Hacker's Lost Treasure Golf also allows players to solve a giant riddle while putting their way around the unique layout. Golfers start the round with a ride on an old mining train, then collect clues on each hole to try to find the missing gold. The course features play through caves, ancient ruins and waterfalls en route to the hidden treasure.
4. Molten Mountain Golf
Molten Mountain Golf in North Myrtle Beach features exploding volcanoes and the usual island-themed obstacles, but what sets it apart is air-conditioned indoor play for those steamy summer days and chilly spring and fall nights. Also affiliated with Mutiny Bay and Cancun Lagoon, hard-core players can purchase a three-day pass for unlimited access to all three courses.
3. Dragon's Lair Miniature Golf
Dragon's Lair Miniature Golf is located at Broadway at the Beach so families can take a break from all the shopping and walking to play 18 of the best holes on the Strand. The state-of-the-art facility features a fire-breathing dragon that startles players with occasional appearances. It's a great place to let the kids play while the parents shop, or make it a family affair and let the grown-ups feel like kids for a day.
2. Hawaiian Rumble
Hawaiian Rumble in North Myrtle Beach is home to the annual Masters of Prominigolf tournament and the official U.S. Prominigolf team's training facility. Filled with volcanoes and waterfalls, the course offers both fun and challenging holes while also providing multiple family photo opportunities on some of the more scenic spots. The pro shop also sells homemade shark's-tooth necklaces unlike the ones found in local novelty shops.
1. Captain Hook's Adventure Golf
Captain Hook's Adventure Golf in Myrtle Beach is unique in that the course follows the theme of Peter Pan and Never-Neverland, complete with signage and recordings of excerpts from the book. Golfers play through caves and on old pirate ships around water hazards that feature a mechanical alligator snapping at the backside of a frightened pirate. Just like Peter Pan, this course makes everyone feel like a kid.
