Food Dude Dishes on the Best Sandwiches Served in Myrtle Beach
This week the Food Dude pays tribute to the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, who wasn't much of a ruler but gets credit for the invention of the sandwich. I'd say that's a pretty solid resume.
It seems the Earl was so find of playing poker that he instructed his servants to put his dinner between two slices of bread so he could have one free hand to raise and fold while stuffing his face with the other.
The hand-held meal caught on with his playing partners, who ordered “the same as Sandwich,” and eventually the world. While other world leaders were conquering new lands, he was starting a culinary revolution.
Four centuries later we are still ordering the same as Sandwich, and the simple invention has come a long way. The Grand Strand is loaded with places that pay tribute to the Earl. Here are the top five sandwiches on the Strand:
Dagwood's Deli & Sports Bar
This long-running establishment now has two locations on the Strand. It’s a popular hangout among sports fans, but even the biggest rivals agree that these sandwiches are the champs.
Named after the popular comic strip “Blondie” and her namesake husband’s knack for stacking a sandwich to the ceiling, Dagwood’s stays true to the spirit by building massive masterpieces that require both hands to eat.
Dagwood’s has lots of options to suit everyone’s taste buds, but Bubba’s Kickin’ Chicken, featuring bite-sized pieces of chicken breast, sauteed onions and peppers, BBQ sauce and cheddar cheese on a sub roll is a Food Dude’s dream come true.
Grecian Delight Cafe

I would be remiss not to include a gyro on this list, and Grecian Delight serves up the best ones on the Grand Strand. The only trouble is finding this hidden gem in a Myrtle Beach strip mall.
This charming, old-world cafe offers lots of excellent lunch and dinner choices from the Mediterranean, but it’s hard to order anything except the gyro, which uses spiced marinated beef, chicken or lamb.
Topped with lettuce, onion, tomato and fresh tzatiki sauce and wrapped in pita bread, this Greek classic is as good as it gets.
Manny's New York Deli
The best deli this side of the Mason-Dixon Line is Manny’s on the south side of Myrtle Beach. Close your eyes, take a bite and be magically transported from the Grand Strand to the Big Apple.
This family-run eatery even has the New York attitude to go with the New York-style sandwiches. Manny’s serves all the traditional favorites – hoagies, heroes and subs – but offers one sandwich you can’t refuse.
The Godfather is stacked high with cappicola, Genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, oil, vinegar and Italian dressing. You don’t have to be a New Yorker to be loud and proud about this sub.
Philly House

Even hard-corp Philadelphians argue about what makes a good Philly Cheesesteak (wit or wit-out onions, provolone or Cheez-Wiz) but all can agree that the Philly House makes a mean one.
This little, stand-alone shack in downtown Myrtle Beach doesn’t look like much, but step up to the counter and order the famous Philly and get ready for greatness wrapped in aluminum foil to keep all the juice from getting loose.
But once unwrapped, grab some napkins to wipe your elbows. The toasted hoagie roll is piled high with strip steak, grilled onion, peppers and mushrooms and melted provolone cheese for a true taste of Philly.
Flynn's Irish Tavern
This traditional Irish pub and eatery is a far cry from a deli. This popular pub also used to serve as North Myrtle Beach’s city jail, but the food is light years better than when it was served to inmates.
You may prefer the Shepherd’s Pie, Fish and Chips or Bangers and Mash over a sandwich, but this Main Street institution also offers the best Reuben this side of Dublin.
Featuring rye bread layered with hot Boar’s Head corned beef, kraut and spicy mustard, washed down, of course, with a cold pint of Guinness.
