Around Your Hotel: Springmaid Beach Resort

Springmaid Beach Resort– 32nd Ave South

There's plenty to do at Springmaid Beach Resort without leaving the hotel property, but there's enough good stuff going on in the neighborhood to warrant exploration around the south end of town.

You get the peace and quiet of staying in the southernmost hotel in the Myrtle Beach city limits along with the convenience of having some of the town's top attraction within a short walk or drive.

From the tranquility of Myrtle Beach State Park and the Springmaid Beach Pier to the activity of the new Market Common complex, here are some great things to do around the resort:

* Fine dining: For nice, romantic meal, your best bet is to make the short drive to Market Common, where you have your choice of choice restaurants. Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar combines the fashion with food for a culinary cruise to the Caribbean, and P.F. Chang's offers an Asian-fusion flavor to its fare.Other Market Common fine dining establishments include Gordon Biersch Brewery and Restaurant, Divine Prime, Kings Street Grill and Roy & Sid's, and J. Edward's on Kings Highway is a Myrtle Beach institution.

* Family dining: One of the most popular places to dine on the Grand Strand is just steps away from your hotel. Damon's is right next door on the oceanfront, offering spectacular views of the ocean with great Southern style food  Famous for its baby-back ribs, which fall off the bone and melt in your mouth, Damon's also cooks up some tasty alternatives for everyone in the family.

* Fast food: There are sandwiches and then there are sandwiches. Manny's Deli serves up the latter, with Boar's Head meats and cheeses stacked high on a hoagie roll with all the garnishments you could ever ask for. Manny's is a New York-style deli that brings locals around for miles to get a taste of its big-city sandwiches. The modest atmosphere adds to the deli's mystique. It's all about the subs.

* Attractions: For a peaceful walk on the beach, head south and you will quickly find yourself in Myrtle Beach State Park, one of the most visited vacation spots in the state. The park features hiking trails and picnic shelters on the beach.  The former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base is just inland and still displays some of the airplanes and history of the base's contributions to military history. If golf is your game, Whispering Pines Golf Club is one of Myrtle Beach's oldest and only municipal courses. Also, there's great fishing off Springmaid Pier and the Burroughs & Chapin Art Museum is just across the street.

* Shopping: Once again, Market Common is your best bet. Featuring more than 80 shops that include some of the most exclusive outlets, Market Common offers the feel of a downtown shopping district. Stores include Ann Taylor, Fossil, Justice, Orvis, Coldwater Creek and Victoria's Secret, there's something for everyone on your shopping list. Market Common also has many of the amenities you would expect to find in a mall – a theater, a spa and ice cream – so you can take a break from the heat.

* Bars: Nacho Hippo at Market Common also serves as a casual-style restaurant, but it's also become one of the hot spots for nightlife in Myrtle Beach. With a happy hour crowd that kicks things off early to a late-night crowd with occasional live music, the Hippo is about as hip as it gets on the south end of town. Gordon Biersch is a great spot for beer snobs. Closer to the hotel and a lot more traditional, the Barrel and Daisy Duke's are for those who prefer a more laid-back atmosphere.
