Myrtle Beach's first golf course is also one of its best. Built in 1927 and recently renovated to a new level of excellence, “The Granddaddy,” as it is known longtime Grand Strand golfers, provides a golf experience like no other. Featuring starters clad in authentic Scottish kilts, Pine Lakes pampers its players on the course by serving a refreshing mimosa or a cup of original low-country clam chowder simmered in a black kettle over an open fire. Designed by Robert White, the first President of the PGA of America, 'The Granddaddy' is the birthplace of Sports Illustrated magazine. It's a challenging course and a tee time with a piece of Myrtle Beach golf history.
In 2009, The Granddaddy was renovated and redesigned by Craig Schreiner who tried as best as possible to bring back all of the classic features that Robert White originally designed over half a century ago. The new design changes and renovations has aided in the success of the Granddaddy becoming one of the best courses in the area once again.
Offering one of the only par-70 layouts in the area, the Granddaddy is considered to be quite difficult, especially the back 9 that features the original Robert White design. On the other hand, the front 9 enhances the natural beauty of the course. And, it is said the winds from the nearby Atlantic Ocean tend to influence your decisions while you play.
If you’re a golfer planning on visiting the Myrtle Beach area, then playing the Granddaddy at Pine Lakes Country Club is a must! Not only will you be greeted by some great championship golf, but you will also be able to say that you experienced Myrtle Beach’s first golf course—and loved it.
