Things To Do
The Perfect “Groundhog Day” in Myrtle Beach

Have you ever seen the classic movie “Groundhog Day” starring Hollywood legend Bill Murray? If you haven’t I recommend that you watch it at least once. Despite the name, this film isn’t about Punxsutawney Phil, but rather, it is about a weatherman who relives the same day over and over again.

Recently I revisited this film and thought to myself, “if I had to relive the same day over and over again, what would be the perfect day in Myrtle Beach?” With so many wonderful possibilities, it was hard to pin it down, but for the sake of this post, I decided on the following things to do in my fictional version of “Groundhog Day.”

Morning

My perfect Groundhog Day would begin on a Saturday morning, after a long night of sleep. I would roll out of bed to the sun shining through my window. Ideally, the weather would be warm, perhaps around 80 degrees with a light breeze.

I would take a quick shower and throw on my favorite springtime outfit before heading out of my apartment for a nice breakfast at Croissants Bistro & Bakery.

At Croissants, I would start off my meal with a delicious White Chocolate Mocha before diving into Croissants’ Shrimp & Grits (the best I’ve ever had). Their Shrimp & Grits are made with succulent shrimp, fried green tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and pimento cheese grits. Admittedly, this is a heavy breakfast before going to the beach, but I wouldn’t mind since this is the meal I would have to eat every single day for breakfast, and it’s worth it.

After breakfast, I would venture down to the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk to take a stroll down by the ocean and work off some of those grits I had for breakfast. While here, I would enjoy the sights and sounds of downtown Myrtle Beach, including the laughter of children playing games in the Fun Plaza Arcade and the music flowing from the oceanfront bars and restaurants.

Afternoon

Once I completed my walk on the Boardwalk, I would hop in my car and ride up to the Golden Mile to find the perfect spot on the beach. If you don’t know where the Golden Mile is, it’s the area between 31st Avenue North and 52nd Avenue North where there is a break between hotels and there are a bunch of beautiful oceanfront homes. Here, you’ll find less beachgoers due to the small amount of parking spots and the distance from the hotels. It’s a great spot to set up camp for a beach day.

During my Groundhog Day, I would spend 3-4 hours at the beach, soaking up the sun and playing in the waves. Swimming, body surfing, looking for shells, building sand castles; all of the fun things to do at the beach would be on my list!

Once I’ve gotten my fill of the beach and worked up an appetite, I would make my way to downtown Myrtle Beach and grab a bite to eat at River City Café! This restaurant is perfect for an easy lunch or dinner near the beach. Of course, I would opt for one of River City Café’s famous burgers – my favorite being the R.C. Burger with Texas chili, jalapenos, hickory smoked bacon, fresh sautéed mushrooms, Swiss and cheddar cheeses, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mustard, and mayo. Nothing is more delicious than a juicy burger after some time at the beach!

Once I was done eating, I would make my way back to my house, I would shower, take a nap, and prepare for the fun evening in store.

Evening

After being refreshed from a post-beach shower and nap, I would head out to Broadway at the Beach for some more fresh air and to check out some stores. Here, I would treat myself to a dessert-before-dinner treat (because why not?) from Kilwins. I’d have a really hard time choosing from the selection of delicious chocolates and ice cream at Kilwins, but ultimately I’d probably choose a cone of Marsh-Mallow S’more ice cream to devour while walking around Broadway.

Once I’ve had enough of Broadway, I’d make my way to the famous Sea Captain’s House by the beach for a special dinner. For my dinner, I would order my favorite dish – the Captain’s Seafood Muddle with sautéed shrimp, scallops, fish, clams, mussels, pancetta, potatoes, and celery in a saffron tomato broth. And for my second dessert of the day – Hummingbird Cake!

Following my dinner at Sea Captain’s House, I would make my way to the Carolina Opry Theater where I would pick up my tickets and see The Carolina Opry Show, featuring singing, dancing, and comedy that’s perfect for all ages. The variety that’s in this show helps with keeping it entertaining even after seeing it day after day in this Groundhog Day situation.

After the show, I would go home and fall asleep, only to wake up the next day and happily do it all over again.
