Windy Hill

The southernmost section of North Myrtle Beach is Windy Hill, a small beach community that got its name from George Washington’s description of the area during his 1791 tour of the South.

The once-sleepy section of town is now home to Restaurant Row, a two-mile stretch of seafood restaurants and other eateries, as well as the Tanger Outlets and several seaside hotels.

Swimming / Sun Bathing

Myrtle Beach Swimming and Sun Bathing Rules
Items may not be set up on the beach before 8 a.m., and they must be removed before 7 p.m. daily. Obey all safety flags displayed at lifeguard stands on the beach. A double red flag means swimming is prohibited. Swimming and surfing are not allowed within 75 yards of piers. Thong bathing suits are not allowed on the beach or in public. Digging holes deeper than two feet is not allowed, and holes dug in the sand must be filled before leaving the beach. Rafts used in the ocean must be made of canvas and include a 360 degree rope around the perimeter. Diving or jumping from piers is prohibited.

Horry County Swimming and Sun Bathing Rules
Items cannot be left on the beach from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. They will be removed by beach patrol. Diving or jumping from piers is prohibited. No glass or alcohol is allowed on the beach or at beach accesses. Swimmers must stay within 50 yards of the shore and may not swim in water more than chest deep. Swimmers must obey lifeguard flags at all times. Thong bathing suits are prohibited. Rafts used in the ocean must be made of canvas with a 360 degree rope around their perimeter.

North Myrtle Beach Swimming and Sun Bathing Rules
Swimming is prohibited beyond 50 yards of shore or in depths greater than shoulder height. If you dig a hole in the sand, you must fill it in before leaving the beach. Surfing and skim boarding are prohibited between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. from May 15 to September 15 except in the following areas: 300 feet north of Cherry Grove Pier and anywhere north thereof, up to 600 feet north of 13th Avenue South, up to 600 feet north of 27th Avenue South, up to 600 feet north of 38th Avenue South. It is illegal to surf within 300 feet of any pier, and surfing leashes must be worn at all times. 

Surfside Beach Swimming and Sun Bathing Rules
Swimmers must remain within 50 yards of shore in water no deeper than chest deep. Lifeguard instructions must be obeyed by all beachgoers. Surfing is prohibited within 300 feet of the pier. From May 15 to September 15, surfing is allowed only in designated areas, and surfers must always wear a surfing leash. Smoking is prohibited on the beach. Do not dig holes more than two feet deep, and fill in holes before you leave the beach. Items may not be left on the beach from 9 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. 

Surf Fishing / Pier Fishing

Myrtle Beach Fishing Rules
Swimmers have right-of-way over surf fishing. Fishing is not allowed in front of lifeguards’ chair-and-umbrella lines and must be done at least 50 feet away from swimmers. It is illegal to catch or attempt to catch sharks from piers or the surf. You must have a Surf Fishing License issued by the state of South Carolina to fish from the surf.

Horry County Fishing Rules
Shark fishing is illegal. Any sharks or other dangerous marine animals must be released immediately if caught. You must obtain a Surf Fishing License from the state of South Carolina to fish from the surf.

Surfside Beach Fishing Rules
Shark fishing is illegal with town limits. Commercial fishing on the public beach is not permitted.

Tents / Umbrellas

Horry County Tent Rules
Tents, tarps, cabanas and pavilions are banned on the beach year-round. Round umbrellas with a shade no greater than 7 feet, 6 inches are permitted. Small pop-up or blow-up cabanas for infants or small children are allowed, but they must be no larger than 4 feet by 3 feet. Shading devices may not impede lifeguards’ view.

Myrtle Beach Tent Rules
Tents are banned on the beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Round umbrellas with a diameter of 7.5 feet or less are permitted, and they must be in line with or behind the line of lifeguards’ umbrellas. From Labor Day to Memorial Day, tents up to 12-feet-by-12-feet can be used, but they must be 10 feet behind the lifeguards’ umbrella line.

North Myrtle Beach Tent Rules
No tents, cabanas, pavilions or other large shading devices are allowed on the beach from May 15 through September 15. During this time, round umbrellas with a center pole no more than 7 feet, 6 inches tall and with a circular shade no larger than 9 feet in diameter are allowed on the beach. Baby tents used by children 18 months of age or younger are permitted if they are no larger than 36 inches high by 36 inches wide and 36 inches deep. Shading devices must not be in the way of emergency personnel on the beach. 

Surfside Beach Tent Rules 
Tents and canopies must not be larger than 10 feet by 10 feet. Umbrellas must be no taller than 7 feet, 6 inches or wider than 9 feet in diameter. Umbrellas, shading devices, and baby tents must be located behind the lifeguard stand to protect the lifeguard’s view of the beach. Shading devices must move west as the tide moves in and lifeguards move back. Tents must be at least 10 feet apart with straight tie downs. A single row of tents is allowed from Melody Lane to 17th Avenue North. Additional emergency access space is required in designated areas along the beach.

Boating

Myrtle Beach Boating Rules
Sailboats may not be left on the beach overnight unless all of the following conditions are met: the sailboat mast is lowered or all rigging is secured, it is positioned so that it doesn’t restrict beach access from dune walkovers or street ends, it is not on a dune or threatening to cause dune damage, a beach permit decal issued by the Myrtle Beach Police Department Beach Patrol is displayed. Motorboats may not be operated within 400 yards of the beach. Jet skis may not be operated within 100 yards of the beach from May 1 through Labor Day unless they are being launched perpendicular to the beach. Sailboats, sail boards, and kite surfing boards may not be operated within 100 yards of the beach from May 1 through Labor Day except when they are being launched perpendicular to the beach.

Horry County Boating Rules
Motorboats may not be operated within 400 feet of the shoreline. Jet skis may not be operated within 100 yards of the shore from May 1 through Labor Day except during their launch and return. Watercraft, including jet skis and sailboats may not be left past sunset on the beach or left unattended.

North Myrtle Beach Boating Rules
Motorized watercraft must operate 100 yards or more off shore. 

Surfside Beach Boating Rules
Access to the beach with a boat or Jet Ski is limited to the designated ramp at 4th Ave. S. Boats may not operate any closer than 50 yards from the shore, and Jet Skis may not operate closer than 150 yards from the shore between May 15-September 15. Operation of any boat or watercraft in a reckless manner is prohibited.

Fireworks

Myrtle Beach Fireworks Rules
It is illegal to discharge, ignite, use or shoot fireworks in the city limits of Myrtle Beach on any public beach, public beach access, street end adjacent to the beach or any public land immediately adjacent to the beach.

Horry County Fireworks Rules
Fireworks are prohibited on the beach and at oceanfront properties that are posted as a Fireworks Prohibited Zone.

State Laws

Seat belts must be worn at all times in a moving vehicle. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. It is unlawful for any person under the age of 21 to buy, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages. Open containers of beer, wine, or liquor are prohibited in vehicles or any public place including streets, sidewalks, and beach areas. Vehicle headlights must be on if operating windshield wipers due to rain or poor road conditions. Motorcyclists are required to use headlights at all times. All children ages 17 and younger in a moving vehicle must be restrained at all times by means appropriate for the child’s age and seating location, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Right turns may be made on a red light throughout the state, except where a sign denotes “No Right on Red.” Remember, stop before turning and give way to traffic already in the intersection. Animal Laws

Myrtle Beach – Dogs on Beach
Dogs in public must be on a leash at all times. Dogs are permitted on the beach anytime from Labor Day through April 30. No dogs are allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1- Labor Day. Dogs must be on a leash 7 feet or shorter at all times. Owners are responsible for picking up and disposing of pet waste.

Horry County – Dogs and Horses on Beach
Animals are not allowed on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 1 – Labor Day. Any animal on the beach must be on a hand-held leash not to exceed seven feet in length and under the control of the person having custody of the animal. Horses are allowed on the beach from Nov. 1 through Feb. 28 in the designated equestrian zone south of Myrtle Beach and north of Surfside Beach. Owners are responsible for picking up and disposing of their animals’ waste.

North Myrtle Beach – Dogs on Beach
Dogs must remain on a leash no longer than 7 feet at all times. Pet owners are responsible for picking up and properly disposing of pet waste. 

Surfside Beach Dogs are not allowed on the beach at any time May 15-Sept. 15. Riding horses on the beach is prohibited.

Georgetown County Horses are not allowed on the beach March 15-Sept. 15. Riding horses on Pawleys Island or Huntington Beach State Park is prohibited year round. Dogs are allowed on public beaches if accompanied by the owner or keeper and under the physical control by means of a leash or similar restraining device, or under the control of a responsible person to whom the dog is obedient on command. On Pawleys Island beach, dogs must be on a leash May-October. At Huntington Beach State Park, dogs must be on a leash at all times. In areas designated for the protection of endangered species, dogs and cats must be on a leash at all times. Back to Top

Alcohol

Possession or consumption of alcohol is prohibited on the beach. Glass containers/bottles are not allowed on the beach. Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is illegal. Penalties include a fine of up to $400 and loss of driver’s license for 6 months for a first offense. It is unlawful for any person under the age of 21 to buy, possess, or consume alcoholic beverages. Open containers of beer, wine, or liquor are prohibited in vehicles or any public place including streets, sidewalks, and beach areas. In Horry and Georgetown counties, restaurants and bars may sell alcoholic beverages on Sunday. Beer and wine are sold in stores, as well. Liquor stores can sell alcoholic beverages from 9 a.m. and to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Only liquor stores can sell alcoholic beverages other than beer or wine. Back to Top

• State Funded Rider Education is not available, but private courses are.
• Eye Protection is required by law for riders and passengers under age 21 unless equipped with windscreen.

• Passenger Seat and Footrests are required if carrying a passenger.

Swim Advisories

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control monitors water quality in the ocean. Temporary swim advisories are issued if bacteria levels are found to be above state standards. During swim advisories, walking on the beach, wading in the ocean, shell collecting and sun bathing are all still allowed. Swim advisories do not close the beach. Some areas of the beach have permanent advisory signs, which have been in place since the late 2000s. These signs advise against swimming because of the potential for elevated bacteria levels, especially after heavy rainfalls. Swashes at these sites allow stormwater runoff to drain into the ocean, which can temporarily raise bacteria levels. Swimming is not advised within 200 feet of the swashes. DHEC tests the areas with permanent advisories and says that the majority of the water samples tested do not exceed state standards for bacterial levels. Coast RTA Bus Service

Coast RTA Public Transit serves Horry and Georgetown counties — covering Myrtle Beach and most of the Grand Strand. The service offers eight bus routes covering the most popular parts of the Myrtle Beach area, from rural connections to the cities to shuttles to some of the area’s top attractions. Popular routes include North and South Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, giving inland residents and visitors easy access to the ocean without the headache of parking and the Myrtle Beach Airport connector for visitors who are flying or need a lift to the nearby The Market Common shopping and dining district. The cost of the shuttle ranges from $1.50 for adults with discounts available for seniors, students, children and Medicaid recipients, to free for tourist-oriented routes such as the Broadway at the Beach shuttle. Uber Ride Service

A popular option in many larger cities, in 2014 the Uber transportation network expanded its UberX low-cost ride service to the Myrtle Beach area. The app-based car service uses a smartphone app to allow customers to request rides around the Myrtle Beach area and sends qualified drivers to pick them up in their own vehicles. UberX charges a base fee of $1.95 per ride, plus per minute and per mile rates that can often be the same or lower than a taxi service. Getting Around Myrtle Beach

If you’ve never visited the beach before, it can seem a bit daunting to travel around the 60 miles of beaches known as The Grand Strand, but in fact getting around Myrtle Beach is quite easy.

Thanks in part to the numbered avenues, and only a few major highways which run the length of the beach, getting the hang of things and getting to your accommodations is not as hard as it looks.

The key for most visitors is to finding the main connector roads for the area where you’re staying and then to do your best to avoid any major bottlenecks, as traffic can get quite congested in spots during the high season.

If you plan to travel around in your own ride or via a rental car, you’ll want to check out some of the important roads to know below, or if you’d rather avoid a headache all together check out some of the area’s public transportation options.

Highways

The additions of new State Routes in recent years along with improvements in connectivity to the existing roads have made it more convenient than ever to get to, from and around the Grand Strand.

With the Atlantic Ocean serving as a barrier to the east, the best way to think of the Myrtle Beach area’s highway system as a tic-tac-toe board, with three main thoroughfares running north-south and three running east-west.

U.S. 17 Business

This road runs directly through the heart of the Grand Strand, from the N.C. state line to Georgetown. Nicknamed Kings Highway, the road can get congested during the summer months, especially near Restaurant Row and The Market Common. New connections to U.S. 17 Bypass, S.C. 31 and S.C. 22 have made it easier to avoid long stretches on Kings Highway.

U.S. 17 Bypass

Running from the north end of Myrtle Beach south to Murrells Inlet, this road was designed to alleviate traffic from Kings Highway. Due to the rapid development of the Myrtle Beach area The Bypass is now developed to the point that it too can get thick with traffic so many use S.C. 31 instead. Business 17 runs closer to the ocean and includes more businesses and stoplights. The Bypass, which is less of a bypass that it was conceived to be, skips some of those lights and can allow for quicker travel.

S.C. 31

For those visitors traveling a long stretch of the Grand Strand, U.S. 31 (aka Carolina Bays Parkway) is a helpful path.  This is a 65-mph highway that runs from S.C. 9 in Little River to S.C. 544 in Socastee. Unlike U.S. 17 Bypass, which has become cluttered with businesses and stop lights, S.C. 31 is red-light free and serves as the true bypass for travelers who need to make their way more than a few miles north or south. Construction that’s currently in progress will eventually extend the route all the way to S.C. 707 in Murrells Inlet, allowing visitors to turn a long drive on U.S.17 into a 20-minute sprint on S.C. 31.

U.S. 501

The traditional route to the beach that longtime visitors may remember sitting in traffic anxiously awaiting their arrival to the beach. While it’s still the most direct path to Myrtle Beach, there are a growing number of intersections, stoplights and bottlenecks near the beach that can cause frustration during the busy summer months. Luckily, there are a number new alternatives, especially for guests staying on the far north or or far south ends of the Grand Strand.

S.C. 22

S.C. 22 is a great way for visitors to get to the northern part of the Grand Strand, including North Myrtle Beach, Cherry Grove and Little River. Also known as Veterans Highway — or the “Conway Bypass” to locals — this road is a 65-mph, multi-lane expressway that allows visitors to cut down on the amount of time spent on the oft-congested U.S. 501 as they enter the Myrtle Beach area. The road breaks off from U.S. 501 in Aynor, S.C. and offers a smooth 32-mile trip to the coast, passing S.C. 31 and connecting to U.S. 17 in the Restaurant Row area near Tanger Outlets.

S.C. 544

This state highway runs from Conway, near Coastal Carolina University, to the Surfside Beach area, ending at U.S. 17 Business near a trio of campgrounds — Pirateland, Ocean Lakes and Lakewood. In recent years S.C. 544 has been widened to allow faster access to the Surfside Beach area and the south end of town. The extension of S.C. 31 has made it easier and quicker to commute between the North Strand to the South Strand.

Connectors & Secondary Roads

Knowing the main highways is an important first step, but to become a seasoned Myrtle Beach visitor it’s best to get to know some of the area’s key connector and cut-through roads. Here’s a look at some of the most prominent roads that will help you avoid congestion during the tourism high season and deliver you to your destination in short order:

Robert M. Grissom Parkway

One other north-south route to consider is Robert M. Grissom Parkway. It runs from the Myrtle Beach International Airport north past 48th Avenue before crossing over the Intracoastal Waterway. This can be a useful route for traveling north-south within the Myrtle Beach city limits. It runs between U.S. 17 Business and the bypass and passes the Coastal Grand Myrtle Beach Mall as well as the Broadway at the Beach shopping complex.

Harrelson Boulevard/George Bishop Parkway

This four-lane through road connects U.S. 501 to Kings Highway by running directly in front of Myrtle Beach International Airport. It starts as George Bishop Parkway and runs past the former Hard Rock Park, before turning into Harrelson Boulevard as it crosses the Intracoastal Waterway. The road, formerly known as Jetport Road, served as an entrance to the airport for many years, but was extended to Kings Highway in 2012. It now provides a great shortcut to Ocean Boulevard for visitors staying on the south side of Myrtle Beach.

Farrow Parkway/S.C. 707

Starting from its newly-renovated, $121 million intersection with U.S. 17 Bypass — an area known locally as “The Back Gate” — this road provides visitors a connection to the south end of the beach and serves as a main artery through Socastee and Murrells Inlet. Farrow Parkway is a four-lane road that runs 3.5 miles between U.S. 17 Bypass and U.S. 17 Business, passing by a number of popular attractions including The Market Common shopping complex, Grand Park and the Warbird Park veterans memorial. On the opposite side, S.C. 707 (aka Socastee Boulevard) is a four-lane road that runs through the heart of the mainly-residential Socastee area of Myrtle Beach and connects on its south end back to U.S. 17 in Murrells Inlet.

Main Street/Robert Edge Parkway

Starting in rural Horry County at S.C. 90, this road runs through the heart of downtown North Myrtle Beach and serves as a convenient way for visitors to access North Myrtle Beach from S.C. 31. Formerly known as the Main Street Connector, this four-lane connector highway gives visitors access to the new North Myrtle Beach Sports & Recreation Complex on its west side and on its east side crosses over the Intracoastal Waterway before turning into Main Street at its intersection with U.S. 17. From that point on, Main Street North Myrtle Beach plays home to a number of tourist-friendly shops, restaurants, clubs before dead ending into Ocean Boulevard at the famed “Horseshoe” area which hosts many concerts and events.

Glenns Bay Road/Surfside Drive

This road provides visitors a sneaky cut through to get from U.S. 17 Bypass to Surfside Beach. Also known as Holmestown Road (on the S.C. 707 side), this road is currently only two lanes wide, however a $46.3 million, three-year expansion will begin in 2015 to widen it to five lanes near U.S. 17 Bypass and three lanes near U.S. 17 Business. Upon crossing U.S. 17 Business, the road turns into Surfside Drive and plays home to a pair of parks, and a few businesses before dead ending into the parking lot for the Surfside Pier.

Garden City Connector

Another cut through from U.S. 17 Bypass is the Garden City Connector, a short stretch which lands visitors on U.S. 17 Business smack dab in between of the main roads for reaching the Garden City Beach area — Pine Avenue and Atlantic Avenue.

Highway 15/Broadway St.

This off-the-beaten-path state route is a sneaky way for visitors traveling from the airport to get straight to downtown Myrtle Beach. While it admitted doesn’t offer the most scenic views of our area, once turning to Broadway Street near downtown it does give you a glimpse of “classic” Myrtle Beach. It runs about two miles between Harrelson Boulevard and U.S. 501, and provides beach access by intersecting with 17th Avenue South and 3rd Avenue South along the way.

Lake Arrowhead Road/Kings Road

These two-lane roads run perpendicular through the north end of Myrtle Beach, allowing visitors to travel to and from the Restaurant Row area. Connecting on both ends to U.S. 17, the road provides access to areas including Apache Pier/Campground, Myrtle Beach Travel Park and Kingston Plantation, as well as attractions like Tanger Outlets, Azealia Shores Golf Club and the Galleria shopping center.

S.C. 9/Sea Mountain Highway

As the longest State Highway in South Carolina, S.C. 9 runs more than 250 miles from the North Carolina state border north of Spartanburg, all the way to the Cherry Grove area of North Myrtle Beach. For those looking to avoid the congestion of U.S. 501 and deterred by two-lane rural roads, S.C. 9 offers an alternative route to the north end of the Grand Strand, running from U.S. 95 through Dillion, Nichols and Longs before turning into Sea Mountain Highway near its intersection with S.C. 31. If you follow Sea Mountain Highway into Cherry Grove you’ll find a number of beachy businesses including restaurants, miniature golf, and shopping centers — before running into the Cherry Grove Fishing Pier at the beach.
