42nd Street Bar & Grill

Don’t be misled by the name. The first part’s accurate, it is located near 42nd Avenue North on Kings Highway. However, this “Bar & Grill” is far more elegant than the name insinuates. This isn’t your chicken wings over the sounds of a juke box and pool table type of joint, but an upscale/casual neighborhood establish that serves some sophisticated cuisine for a strip-mall “bar and grill.”

42nd Street Bar & Grill doesn’t bill itself as a seafood restaurant, but the menu is heavy on unique dishes inspired by the ocean, like the Calamari & Spinach Bouquet, Mussells Miso, Ahi Tuna Tataki, Shrimp Gyoza Lattice and a Fresh Oysters appetizer that sounds straight out of Bon Appetit – “Tomato and Horseradish Puree with a Soy & Kombu Seaweed Demi-Glaze  and 42nd’s House Mignonette” (see, told you this wasn’t your average bar and grill). And those are just for starters; the main menu features Padre Island Salmon, Scallops & White Bean, Snapper & Quinoa and Lobster Mac ‘N Cheese. 42nd Street Bar & Grill also offers landfood options, like the Filet & Truffle, Beef & Mushroom Wellington, and Chicken & Prosciutto Roulade, as well as an assortment of salads. The bar serves a wide selection of wines and beers, and the house drinks are also something special.

This place is upscale compared to most bar and grills, but the atmosphere is light and friendly, like a neighborhood pub should be. Black tablecloths and soft lighting might give you a first impression that you’ve stumbled into a fine-dining establishment, but a closer look will give you a familiar feel of a warm place you’ve visited before.
