Myrtle Mile Festival to Donate to Hurricane Relief
MyrtleBeach.com will donate $1 per race entry in the inaugural Myrtle Mile Race & Festival to Hurricane Florence flood relief efforts, the website announced this week.
The Myrtle Mile Race & Festival is slated for 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 3 on Ocean Boulevard between 24th and Ninth Avenues North. The monetary donation will be made to the Waccamaw Community Foundation, and food will be collected during the event for local food banks.
MyrtleBeach.com General Manager Cassidy Moore said it was important for the team and race organizers to add a flood relief element to the event.
“The immediate coast was fortunate that we didn’t take a direct hit from the storm, but our neighbors along the Grand Strand have suffered tremendous losses due to post-storm flooding,” Moore said. “We wanted this race and festival to be a fun event to bring the community together and also a way for us to contribute to those who are still recovering.”
Festival Promotions organizes and hosts the event. Race organizer Mike Shank said Myrtle Beach is the perfect spot for such an event.
“Myrtle Beach is a tremendous running destination,” Shank said. “Between the beautiful views and the flat terrain, we wanted to create a fast race that nearly everyone would be able to participate in and leave an everlasting experience the whole family can enjoy.”
Race participants can join a variety of heats, including walking/fun run, dog jog, competitive, and elite. Elite runners will compete for prize money, including a chance to break the World Record and win $25,000. Hicham El Guerrouj is the current men’s record holder with his time of 3:43.13, while Svetlana Masterkova has the women’s record of 4:12.56.
A family-friendly mini-festival will follow the race with food trucks, beer, and live music on the former Pavilion site at Ocean Boulevard and Ninth Avenue North.
All participants in the Myrtle Mile will receive:
