Area Overview
Socastee, a residential community along the Intracoastal Waterway, is home to the historic Socastee Swing Bridge
Located in unincorporated Horry County around the junction of Highways 544 and 707, Socastee lies along the Intracoastal Waterway and abuts the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base.
Once a bedroom community for soldiers stationed at the base, Socastee has forged its own identity since the closing of the base in 1994 and developed into a residential and commercial center.
Large single-family neighborhoods and multi-family complexes make up most of Socastee’s housing market, and the expansion of Highway 31 to Highway 544 (and future plans to extend the thoroughfare to Highway 707) have sparked development in more rural areas.
Waterfront homes on the Intracoastal Waterway with private docks are in high demand for boaters looking for the least expensive real estate on the water.
The Horry County Police and Fire & Rescue cover the area, but there is no city government in place despite recent talks of incorporation.
Socastee has its own elementary, middle and high schools through Horry County Schools, as well as parks and recreation facilities, a library and other amenities.
Current construction will give residents a straight shot across Highway 17 Bypass to Market Common and the beach.
