102 THINGS TO DO IN MYRTLE BEACH

92. Sporting Events

Among the sports being played on the Grand Strand, there’s minor league baseball, Division I collegiate athletics, a world-class high school basketball tournament during the holidays, and numerous amateur youth baseball tournaments throughout the year. And as fun as they are to watch on television, there’s nothing quite like being there to hear the crack of the bat, the shoes squeaking on the gymnasium floor, or the crowd celebrating in unison when an athlete reaches deep down and does something great. Tickets for these events are also very budget-friendly, and the quaint size of the arenas gives attendees a close look at all the action. So after a day at the beach or in the pool, get dressed, have a bite to eat, and head out to one of the area’s exciting sporting events, something the whole family can enjoy.

Beach Ball Classic

This high school b-ball tournament started in 1981 as a small 8-team holiday season affair and has evolved into a national-caliber 16-team event. You might’ve heard of some of the Beach Ball Classic alumni – Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, Jason Kidd and Kevin Garnett, to name a few. And there’s no telling when the next superstar will be playing, but the tournament is always packed with teenaged boys and girls playing their hearts out, trying to get a shot at the next level.

Coastal Carolina University Athletics

Just a short drive inland from the beach are the sporting arenas of the Chanticleers, a rising force in the ranks of Division I college athletics. On Saturdays in the fall, the football team suits up for battle and seldom leaves the field without a ‘W’, compiling a 24-5 record over the last two seasons and reaching the national quarterfinals in the NCAA FCS tournament both times. The list of alumni that have graduated to the NFL includes running back Mike Tolbert, and wide-receiver Jerome Simpso

Playing in the National Premier Soccer League, the semi-professional squad hosts teams from around the region at their stadium on 34th Avenue North. Fans also get a chance to hang out and kick it with the guys after the game during interactive sessions designed to foster player-community relationships.
