The second leg of our culinary cruise around the world, or at least our little corner of it, takes us across the Atlantic, into the Mediterranean and onto the boot of Italy.

Of course, in our scale model of the world that is the Grand Strand, the toe is Pawleys Island, the heel is Little River and the Mediterranean is Murrells Inlet.

You now what they say; when in Rome or Myrtle Beach... So let's hit the five best spots for Italian food in town without needing a passport and plane ticket:

Angelo’s Steaks & Pasta

Angelo's Steaks and Pasta 2311 South Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577

This locals' favorite has been a Myrtle Beach institution for more than three decades. And, thanks to a recent relocation to a larger and nicer facility, it will be for years to come.

Angelo's moved two blocks south from its old 21st Avenue South location for more much-needed room and parking. A loyal customer base required the restaurant to move in order to grow, but little else has changed. The best thing about Angelo's is it not only serves all the classic Italian dishes, including an expanded buffet, to keep Italian lovers happy, it also serves "The Best Steaks in the Universe" to cater to all tastes.

Ciao

Blink and you'll miss this hidden treasure, but your nose will know there's something good cooking at Ciao. Tucked away in a corner unit of Pine Lakes Plaza, there are big flavors being served in this tiny cafe.

Open for lunch and dinner, Ciao makes authentic Italian dishes for reasonable prices, making it a popular gathering spot for locals in the neighborhood. The seating is tight but it lends to a friendly atmosphere.

The menu includes all the traditional Italian favorites, and the lasagna is some of the best I've had anywhere. But the daily specials, particularly those featuring fresh local seafood, are the way to go.

Old World Italian

This Murrells Inlet eatery has stood the test of time in a town that revolves around seafood. Since opening in 1995, Old World's old-school Italian has gained a strong fan following.

This family owned and operated restaurant is known for its early bird specials, offering generous portions of house favorites for a fraction of the price. The Veal Sorrento Linguini and Clam Sauce are to die for.

Rossi’s Italian Restaurant

Rossi's 9636 North Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572

You probably wouldn't expect to find one of the most romantic restaurants in town sandwiched into a strip mall off Restaurant Row, but Rossi's seems like a world away once you enter the doors to this eatery.

The adjoining Eighty-Eights piano bar adds to the atmosphere and provides a relaxing place for after-dinner drinks. But the biggest appeal to Rossi's is the food - authentic Italian with an emphasis on local seafood.

The Lobster-Stuffed Ravioli and the Veal Parmiagiana are house favorites, but the special dinners for two make a perfect romantic meal to share. Also split an after-dinner dessert, or take home some canolis.

Umberto’s Pittsburgh-Italian Trattoria

Umberto's 4886 Highway 17 South, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29582

This Pittsburgh-style restaurant caters to those from the Steel City, where Italian food has its own distinctive taste and flavor. With thousands of Steel City transplants and vacationers in town, Umberto's is in high demand.

Located at the Barefoot Landing complex, Umberto's has been packing them in for years with a dazzling menu and an extensive wine list. The mixed grills, offering unique cuts of meat cooked to perfection, are popular picks.

But the best part of visiting Umberto's is the family atmosphere and friendly banter between staff and guests. It's like going dinner at your favorite Italian family's house and being treated like one of their own.
