Only in Myrtle Beach will you find a sub shop located between a putt-putt golf course and a bingo parlor. At least it helps to find the Philly House, a one-run lunch counter located beneath a towering statue of a sea captain and in front of a neon “B-I-N-G-O” sign. You will likely be greeted by owner and operator Nick Papagiannis, who makes sure this place stands out with some fantastic sandwiches.

With a small and humble restaurant like this, the grub had better be good. No problem there as the Philly House consistently cranks out hot and cold sandwiches at a fair price. As the name implies, the classic Philly Cheesesteak is this place’s signature item, and they do it up right – sliced sirloin covered with melted provolone and (“wit or wit-out”) grilled onions and peppers. Sorry, South Philly fans, no Cheez-Whiz on these bad boys. The classic gyro is another staple, featuring hot, sliced marinated beef and lamb with lettuce, tomato, onion and special sauce in a pita pocket. Burgers, fries and other grill items are also available, and be sure to grab plenty of napkins.

Best of Philly’s Atmosphere

The Philly House is a classic lunch-counter dive, with a stand-up eating station and limited seating surrounded by a 1960s mom-and-pop sub shop décor. The front door leads straight to the counter window, where you can read the board and place your order for here or to go. “To go” may be the way to go if you’re looking for anything other than a spot to devour your aluminum-wrapped treasure.
