New Horry County Schools Opening in 2017

Three new schools plan to open in time for the upcoming 2017-2018 Horry County school year, with two other schools planned on completing construction during the school year. Locations for these new schools include Myrtle Beach, Socastee and Carolina Forest. If you’re planning on moving to the Grand Strand soon, be sure to check out the opening dates and locations for these new Horry County schools.

Myrtle Beach Middle School

Myrtle Beach will soon see the opening of a new middle school at the site of the former Myrtle Beach Elementary School and Myrtle Beach Family Learning Center at 29th Avenue North and Oak Street in Myrtle Beach. The new Myrtle Beach Middle School will feature two floors and will accommodate 1,200 students from grades 6 to 8.

The school is located on the same block of other Myrtle Beach Schools, including Myrtle Beach Primary, Elementary, Intermediate and High Schools. The former Myrtle Beach Middle School will become the future site of Myrtle Beach Intermediate School, which includes grades 4 and 5.

However, the school will not be completed by the start of the 2017-2018 school year in August. A tentative opening date is scheduled for November 2017.

Ten Oaks Middle School

The new two-story Ten Oaks Middle School will accommodate 1,200 students from grades 6 to 8 and will be located off of Carolina Forest Boulevard, near Carolina Forest Recreation Center, Carolina Forest Library and many Carolina Forest neighborhoods, including The Farm, Plantation Lakes and Waterbridge.

The middle school will help with overcrowding issues for Carolina Forest schools. Ten Oaks Middle School is expected to be open for the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year on Aug. 23.

Socastee Elementary School

A new elementary school will soon be open for students this upcoming school year. The new Socastee Elementary School will be two stories and will accommodate 916 students from grades CD to 5. The school will be located off of Highway 707 in Socastee, just north of Socastee High School and across Highway 17 Bypass from the Market Common. The school is replacing the older elementary school currently located next to Socastee High School.

Socastee Elementary School is expected to be open for the start of the 2017-2018 school year on Aug. 23.

Socastee Middle School

Socastee will also see a new middle school nearing completion this year. Socastee Middle School will be two-stories and will hold 800 students from grades 6 to 8. The school will help with overcrowding issues at Forestbrook Middle School.

The school will be located off of Highway 17 Bypass and Esso Road in Myrtle Beach. The school will be located near the Market Common and many of its surrounding neighborhoods, including Emmens Preserve, Cresswind and The Reserve.

The school currently plans on opening later into the 2017-2018 school year.

St. James Intermediate School

St. James Intermediate School will sit adjacent to Burgess Elementary School, just off of Scipio Lane in Myrtle Beach. The two-story intermediate school will include grades 5 and 6 and accommodate 1,200 students. The school will relieve a grade level from both Burgess Elementary and St. James Middle School.

St. James Intermediate School sits just west of Surfside Beach and is expected to open for the start of the 2017-2018 school year on Aug. 23.
