NAS is playing the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach this Friday. Once known by the moniker "Nasty Nas," the artist is a perpetrator of gritty rap and hip-hop tunes highly popular with the kids. His involvement in a public feud against rapper Jay-Z (aka Mr. Beyonce) spurred many rap-attacks on behalf of both artists, meaning that the Nasty One may perform songs in which the name of Jay-Z is taken in vain. So if you're playing for Team NAS, head out Friday night.

Michael Franti & Spearhead also hit the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach this Saturday, supported by DJ Funklore. The perennially barefoot and vegan Franti, an outspoken social activist, has led a varied and full career. With a previous band (The Disposable Heroes of Hiphopcrisy), he opened for U2's Zoo TV tour, and later quit his association with the giant Capitol Records due to their suggestion that he collaborate with Will Smith. I as a woman can say that turning down Will Smith requires some rather lofty strength of character. When working with the Disposable Heroes, Franti recorded an album of musical accompaniment for novelist William Burroughs' readings. Even more interestingly, one of Spearhead's members is named Carl Young (not to be confused with the ground-breaking Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung). Impressive. The band's style blends reggae, hip hop, funk, folk, and rock styles to create a unique sound. Active since 1994, Spearhead achieved acclaim last year with the song "Say Hey (I Love You)" off their 2008 album All Rebel Rockers.

Also Saturday is the 2nd Annual Tanger Outlet Fit for Families 5K Run/Walk. Registration is $25 and proceeds go to benefit the Conway Medical Center. Visit http://www.tangeroutlet.com/race/ to find out more.

Larry the Cable Guy performs at the Alabama Theatre Saturday night, bringing his down-home brand of Southern comedy to the Grand Strand. The very idea of Larry's matronly arms straining against sleeveless denim is reason enough to get a ticket. Larry is known for his involvement with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, as well as for appearances in movies like Health Inspector and Witless Protection.

So you can be Gangsta, Rasta, Healthy or Country this weekend. Take your pick!
