Terry’s Top 10: Enjoying Myrtle Beach in the fall
By Terry Massey Sep 07, 2010
Just call it a Labor Day of love, because I love when it’s over.
Don’t get me wrong; I love living in the Myrtle Beach area during the summer, and year-round, as a matter of fact. But there’s something about this month-long stretch when summer melts into fall that is my favorite time of all. Here’s your top 10 things to love about life at in Myrtle Beach in the month of September:
10) Myrtle Beach weather is never better than this time of year, except for the occasional hurricane. The humidity goes away and we get those warm, sunny days when you can hop in your car without evaporating or walk to the mailbox without breaking a sweat. And the nights get that crisp, cool feeling you haven’t experienced since April.
9) When was the last time you walked into a restaurant for dinner without having to put your name on a list and gnawing on your arm before you were seated? Those days are almost over, except for happy-hour and early-bird specials. Soon you’ll be able to stroll into even the nicest establishments and sit at the table of your choice.
8) This is the best time of year for seafood, whether you catch it and cook it yourself or pay someone else to do it for you. I’m the do-it-yourself type and will go fishing, crabbing and shrimping at the drop of a line. Grab a pole, trap or cast net and head to the nearest inlet. There’s a free all-you-can-eat seafood buffet waiting for you.
7) The sports version of the leaves changing from green to autumn colors is baseball season turning into football season, which is sort of like a religious period for most Southerners. Locals have added reason to enjoy the gridiron this fall; Myrtle Beach High is ranked No. 1 in the state and has one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. Check them out one cool Friday night.
6) Is it me or does the produce seem to get sweeter and riper this time of year? Check out Myrtle’s Market and pick up some fresh squash, corn on the cob, peppers and tomatoes and make a big country supper for family and friends. They’ll be surprised how much better fresh-off-the-vine tastes compared to poured-from-a-can.
5) More than any other time, live music tends to move to the great outdoors instead of the air-conditioned indoors. The Beach, Boogie and BBQ Festival at Market Common on Labor Day weekend kicks off a month of great music, capped by Cool John Ferguson at the Pawleys Island Music Festival in Litchfield Beach on Sept. 26.
4) Remember all the cool stuff you wanted to do but the lines have been too long all summer? Whether it’s amusement parks, water parks or miniature golf, there’s a small window of time in which those places are open but the crowds are down. Plan a tourist night with friends and go out and ride, splash and putt-putt like you don’t live here (Myrtle Beach T-shirt optional).
3) I love me some kids, but you must admit that things get a lot quieter once the little ankle-biters go back to school. Not only are they entertained all day, but that early bed time means more fun time for mom and dad. Adults can now go out for a candle-lit dinner without worrying about the rug rats melting Crayons over the candle.
2) Traffic has a funny way of going home with the tourists and locals can finally drive to their destinations without finding a secret route. Now that Highway 17 Bypass and Business are no longer parking lots it’s a good time to get out and explore the parts of the beach you don’t go during the summer.
1) A big part of the beach’s beauty is that it is unchanging (trust me, I’ve tried counting the waves before and they never stop). But the scenery around it does as signs of human life slowly begin to disappear from the surf and sand. All the more reason to go. The weather and water are nice and the number of people enjoying it are few.
