South Carolina coast not in Hurricane Earl’s path

By Ashlee Carson Aug 31, 2010

With two named storms churning far off the East Coast, Myrtle Beach visitors may be concerned about their vacation and travel plans.

The important thing is to plan ahead and stay informed. Here’s the latest on the storm situation:

As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Earl is a Category 4 storm with winds topping 135 mph. Earl is forecast to make landfall late Thursday night or early Friday morning along the Outer Banks off North Carolina’s coast, about 300 miles north of Myrtle Beach, according to the National Hurricane Center. Storm warnings will be issued as Earl nears landfall. Hurricane Earl is not expected to affect the South Carolina coast or the Myrtle Beach area.

Tropical Storm Fiona is headed toward the Eastern Caribbean Islands near Antigua, Barbuda and St. Kitts with top winds near 40 mph. If it makes landfall, these islands could see rainy conditions within the next two days. Since Fiona formed so near to Hurricane Earl and is so fast moving, it is not expected to reach hurricane strength.

Although the Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 1, the East Coast typically sees the heaviest activity in late summer so it’s no surprise that two storms are popping up on the radar here in late August. If you have late-summer travel plans, you can stay informed by checking the National Hurricane Center’s Web site and MyrtleBeach.com.
