Out and About in Myrtle Beach: Car show, food and more this weekend
By Lauren Poster Mar 18, 2010By Lauren Poster
You whippersnappers better slow down if you want to check out some hotrods this weekend at the Run to the Sun XXII Antique Car and Truck Show. An outdoor display of vintage chrome, the show is a family-friendly event firmly parked on the grounds of the former Myrtle Square Mall off Business 17 (2501 N. Kings Hwy) from Thursday to Saturday.
Whether you’re into John Deere Americana, Bat-mobile kitsch, or Al Capone chic, there will be something for everyone. Registration fees ($40) and any other proceeds from the event, sponsored by the Pee Dee Street Rodders Association, benefit the Children’s Miracle Network, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and Horry County Benevolent Fund. Beginning with a cruise down Ocean Boulevard on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. and a shaggin’ party at Celebrity Square Friday night, the show will invite spectators Thursday through Saturday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Barefoot Landing will be host to the annual Taste of the Coast on Saturday, sponsored by Risen Christ Lutheran Church. From 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., area restaurants will serve tempting samples, live musicians will entertain, and ponies will offer the saddles off their very backs for kiddie rides. Admission is just $1 or a canned food donation. The event doubles as a food drive to benefit the North Strand Helping Hand.
Along with pollen, charity seems to be in the air. Another do-gooding event, the American Red Cross Heroes Campaign Family Mini Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Nascar Speedpark mini golf course. Entrance fee is $60 per foursome and $25 per individual. Fees include breakfast, golf equipment/greens fees, awards ceremony, goody bag and entrance to the speedpark. Visit www.coastalscarc.org to learn more about the Red Cross Heroes program.
If you just want to sit back and be entertained, check out the Godfathers Meshuggener Wedding Comedy at the Holiday Inn West on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. A dinner theater event, you will play guests at a traditional “family” wedding. Get more information at www.grandstranddinnertheater.com. Or you can check out the legendary pundit, George “I drink alone” Thorogood at the House of Blues on Friday. Whew! Busy weekend. Now get out there and donate to the cause of fun.
