Myrtle Beach restaurants: Mom & Pop Go Gourmet

Most diners enjoy discovering little family-owned restaurants, and the Myrtle Beach area has thousands of them. Here are a few of the best.

Café Old Vienna

Café Old Vienna

3901 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, 946-6252

True Viennese cuisine is prepared by Viennese natives. You’ll get your schnitzels, wursts and fresh breads, all served with warm and efficient service. Save room for incredibly splendid desserts. Space is limited so if you’re going for dinner, call ahead for a reservation.

Ciao! Italian Restaurant & Deli

Ciao! Italian Restaurant & Deli

5223 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, 449-5700

This cozy spot features a casual friendly atmosphere and wonderful Italian lunches and dinners. A few dishes include Fried Calamari, Mozzarella Caprese, Lasagna, Walnut Ravioli, Antipasto, Veal Parmesan, Chicken Limone, Crab Cakes, Scallops Diavolo and Tiramisu.

Crady's

Crady's

332 Main St., Conway, 248-3321

Everything is extraordinarily delicious at this downtown Conway institution. Try one of the exquisite lunch salads or Vegetable Lasagna, or at dinner there are Ginger Scallops and Flat Iron Steak with blue cheese and chocolate demi-glace. This is definitely a place where you’ll want to save room for desserts like Two-Bite German Chocolate Toffee Crunch.

Fat Jack’s Wings & Things

Fat Jack’s Wings & Things

353 U.S. 17 Business N., Surfside Beach, 238-3355

This is where you can get the best wings on the planet. They’re cooked so the skin is crispy, and the plump inside is moist and juicy. Flavors are spectacular, from the sweet and tangy House version to Garlic Parmesan, Texas Gold Barbecue, Jalapeno Teriyaki, Cajun and extra-spicy Kamikaze. They also have delicious beers on tap.

Finocchio’s

Finocchio’s

3100 U.S. 17 Business S., Murrells Inlet, 651-2110

Go here once, and it will likely become a place your heart and stomach often leads you. A few of our favorite dishes include Ravioli Rustici (sautéed with pancetta, onions, vodka, tomato sauce and cheese), Pasta al Forno (baked ziti with ground beef, peas, hard eggs and tomato sauce), Salmone al Pepeverde (grilled salmon with brandy/green peppercorn cream sauce), and Fettuccine Lizu where fresh noodles are sautéed with wild mushrooms, pancetta, roasted pignolis and brandy cream sauce. The pasta is house-made.

International Kitchen

International Kitchen

Parkway Plaza, just west of North Myrtle Beach on S.C. 9, 399-3668

The Fiut family serves specialties from their native Poland plus a broad range of other cuisines including Greek, Italian, German, Asian and American. The atmosphere is part diner and part upscale with dishes like Schnitzel, Scampi, Chicken Parmesan, Pierogis and Golobki.

Kudzu Bakery

Kudzu Bakery

221 Willbrook Blvd., Pawleys Island, 235-8560 and 120 King St., Georgetown, 546-1847

These are wonderlands of fresh-baked sweets and breads, plus great places to buy wines, cheeses, ready-to-cook entrees, condiments, oils, dressings, kitchen accessories and much, much more. You can also grab-and-go with their prepackaged sandwiches.

Ocean Fish Market

Ocean Fish Market

302 Kingston Street (a block north of Main Street), beside the Waccamaw River, Conway, 248-4334

This one isn’t exactly gourmet, unless you only consider the great-tasting food. As it has been for 60 years, the dining area is seven picnic tables under ancient live oak trees. Sandwiches include fillets of whiting, flounder, croaker, spot and catfish, and barbecue, soft shell crab and crab cake. You can also get seafood dinners, and fresh seafood to take home and cook.

Roz’s Rice Mill Café

Roz’s Rice Mill Café

10880 Ocean Highway, in the Hammock Shops, Pawleys Island, 235-0196

Roz’s fresh soups, sandwiches and salads, plus the charming building and friendly servers, make this one of the best darn little old lunch spots in the entire Grand Strand. They also serve pleasant and ambitious dinners.
