Halloween fun: Beach-themed costume ideas

If you love animals and Halloween, why not combine the two? Consider being one of the many awesome beach or ocean animals that remind you of Myrtle Beach. Choose from options such as a fish, turtle, seagull, crab, jellyfish, and much more. There are endless ways to pull off beach animal costumes; whether you go for a full-body mascot-like costume, or whether you go for something simpler such as a pants, a shirt, and a hat/accessories that remind you of the animal of your choosing (such as a crab hat and crab claw gloves). The possibilities are endless!

Are you and your best friend or partner looking for a fun bestie or couple costume idea? Flip Flop costumes are both hilarious and cute at the same time. There are flip flop costumes that you can buy online, or you can be creative and construct your own pair (or mismatched set) out of cardboard, foam, paint, and other materials.

Sure the hula dance is more Hawaii than Myrtle Beach, but this is still an easy, inexpensive costume idea that will remind you of beachier times. You’ll need a grass skirt (available at party shops or even dollar stores), a bikini top or coconut bra, and a hefty dose of confidence to pull off the look.

These Myrtle Beach pros are trained to protect and help beachgoers in any emergency, and luckily, their look is easy to reproduce. For the guys, you’ll need some red shorts and a Lifeguard tank top or t-shirt — available at many area beachwear stores. Ladies can choose from the lifeguard tank or the red one-piece bathing suit. Dab on a bit of white sunscreen, and you’re ready to roll!

Every girl dreams about being a mermaid once, so why not pick it as your Halloween costume this year? Mermaid costumes are easy, fun, and you can be super creative with your look. Of course, you can always buy a pre-fabricated costume, or you can make your own. Sew some tulle to the bottom of a pencil skirt, grab your favorite bikini/bathing suit top (or make your own shell top), wear a wig or style your hair with some beachy waves, and put on some whimsical makeup and you’ll have a complete look. Guys can also be creative and dress up as a Merman!

Stand out –and stand tall— in a funny palm tree costume. Wear a tan or brown ensemble such a dress or pants and a shirt for the base of the palm tree, and fashion a hat out of home made felt leaves or leaves from a craft store. It’s an easy and creative costume that will get people feelin’ beachy while trick-or-treating or at a Halloween party.

The coast is full of pirate legends and lore. From Charleston’s Blackbeard to the Myrtle Beach area’s own Drunken Jack, these famous pillagers make up a large part of our history. In 2011, Dolly Parton even got into the act, opening her Pirate Voyage show in Myrtle Beach. The pirate look works for both kids and grown ups. You’ll need a bandana, an eye patch and a nice puffy shirt to rock your pirate look.

This is an easy look to pull off. Grab some board shorts or a wetsuit and give your hair a quick tousle, and you’re on your way. A great tan and some blond highlights top off this beach look. Carry around a surfboard with you and get bonus points on your costume.

Of course, we love our Myrtle Beach visitors. But we occasionally see a tourist that has taken his or her beach look just a little too far. To get the tacky tourist look, slap on some colored zinc sunscreen and raid the bargain rack at a beachwear store. Flip-flops with socks are a must, too. Add a fanny pack and some cheap sunglasses, and you’re good to go!
