Food Dude Restaurant Review: Sweet Carolina’s Lowcountry Grill & Smoke House

The Food Dude loves Lowcountry cooking, but it's hard to find all the diverse dishes of the Carolina coast under one roof.

Enter Sweet Carolina's Lowcountry Grill Smoke House, the latest addition to Broadway at the Beach's restaurant lineup and a tribute to many flavors that call our corner of the country home.

As the name suggests, barbecue takes center stage at Sweet Carolina's, located on the 21st Avenue North side of the Broadway Complex. It isn't hard to find from the parking lot; simply follow your nose to the source of the smell of smoked pork and hickory.

A small covered front porch greets you at the door and these seem to be the best seats in the house on a cool night or a sunny bit not too steamy day. Or step inside to the AC and an even broad range of sweet smells coming from the kitchen.

It's much more than BBQ ribs and chicken. Steaks and chops of all walks of life are offered, but it's the seafood that makes the Lowcountry connection complete. From shrimp and grits to Po Boy sandwiches, guests get a taste of South Carolina by both land and sea.

Even the side items have a soul food/country cooking flair. The mac and cheese is baked and tasty, the fried green tomatoes are crispy and topped with a sweet vidalia onion relish, and the sweet potato fries are popular lunch items.

A wide range of soups, such as the chicken gumbo and seafood bisque, and salads, including the chopped apple salad chocked full of fruits and nuts and the house caesar are great starters, as well as a long list of appetizers.

Sandwiches, such as the classic BBQ sandwich piled high with slaw, wraps like the Blackened Lowcountry Shrimp wrap, and burgers highlight the lunch menu, while seafood combinations, smoked pork platters and the Smokehouse Chicken make great dinner meals.

And don't dare forget about dessert – Key Lime Pie topped with roasted macadamia nuts, bread pudding soaked in bourbon sauce and strawberry shortcake make for the perfect end to a delicious meal that will remind you of all the reasons to love Lowcountry cooking.
