Food Dude Dishes on the Best Places to Get Dessert in Myrtle Beach
By Terry Massey Aug 01, 2012
Last week the Food Dude checked in about the first meal of the day - breakfast. This week let's talk about the last one - dessert.
I know, technically, speaking, it's supposed to be dinner, but let's get real. We're Americans, and the old tummy starts grumbling sometime between supper and sack time - just enough time to pack on some useless calories.
Make that a lot, especially with these guilty pleasure. The Grand Strand is packed with eateries that cater to the sweet tooth, but these five serve up some of the best desserts in town after the sun goes down:
Croissants Bistro & Bakery: This small French cafe and bakery must smell a lot like heaven, and it tastes a lot like it too.
Follow your nose to a counter filled with mouth-watering treats like double chocolate cake, key lime pie and chocolate-raspberry torte. Croissants also makes specialty cakes to order, and there are always an assortment of fresh muffins, cookies and other baked goods on hand.
Hit the restaurant for a nice nightcap of coffee and dessert de jour or pick up some sweet for later from the bakery. Just be sure to stop off next door at Bi-Lo for a couple of gallons of milk.
Maggie Moo's Ice Cream & Treatery: Nothing cures a late-night sweet tooth like ice cream, and Maggie Moo's has the scoop on that subject, serving up wide and unique varieties as well as other creative concoctions.
Also offering ice cream pizzas and ice cream cupcakes, Maggie Moo's makes Baskins-Robbins' 31 Flavors look skimpy. This Barefoot Landing chain serves more than 70 different flavors and just as many toppings choices.
Try a scoop of pumpkin cheesecake sprinkled with praline pieces, or chocolate raspberry topped with peanut M&M's. Your imagination is limited only by exactly how sinful your mood, but there's also lowfat yogurt for the cautious.
Donut Man: With two major national donut chains featuring several locations on the Grand Strand (not mentioning names, but their initials are DD and KK), you might think they had the local donut scene covered.
But it turns out there's room for the little guy, or in this case, the Donut Man. This multi-restaurant-plex
in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach stays open all night so sweet-toothed travelers can pop in anytime.
Offering a wide variety of donuts, muffins and other pastries, the Donut Man's treats have their own distinct sweetness and are considerably cheaper than you might find at a Starbuck's. Two donuts and a bottomless coffee are $4.99, so it won't leave a big hole in your wallet.
The Melting Pot: For a more romantic dessert experience, cap off date night at the Melting Pot and melt her heart like milk chocolate.
Even if you go somewhere else for dinner, have the patience to pass on the dessert cart and wait for the
Melting Pot's sweet fondue selections. Dip fruits and cake pieces into a table-top volcano filled with chocolate lava. What the heck, feed each other and make the other tables sick/jealous.
Melting Pot offers after-dinner hours for the bar, coffee and desserts, but it's also a great place for
dinner. The special four-course meals include dessert, so be sure to save room for the highlight of the trip.
Kirk's 1890 Ice Cream Parlor: This Myrtle Beach original has been packing in locals and tourists for many summers, giving visitors a heaping scoop of old-school atmosphere along with their ice cream.
What sets Kirk's apart is the old-timey ice-cream parlor feel. Vintage video games, black-and-white checkered board tile and antique-looking parlor chair add to the experience, but the proof is in the ice cream.
Kirk's offers all the major flavors of a national chain along with a full menu of sundaes, milkshakes and other concoctions topped to fit your taste buds, and the crunchy sugar-waffle cones can hold as many scoops as you can fit without turning into a soggy piece of cardboard.
